Parish History

The property on which our parish is built was once farm land that belonged to the Anderson family. In 1937 our first pastor, Rev. J. Harold Shea began the building of our church which was completed in May 1938. Our Education Ministry began in September 1937 in the Anderson's original farmhouse. Expansion of enrollment led to the construction of the first brick school building as well as the convent in 1948.

Following Fr. Shea's transfer in 1948, our pastors were Rev. Walter Bush, Rev. James P. Niedergeses, Rev. Albert Siener, Rev. Vincent Hines, Rev. Joseph Brando, Rev. T. Allen Humbrecht, and Rev. Michael Nolan who is presently pastor and an alumnus of our school.

The building and grounds have been renovated and added to over the years. In 1956 the balcony was added to the church, as well as the covered walkway to the school, and the vestibule was enlarged. Also at that time, the school added four classrooms and the cafeteria size was doubled. A football field and stadium enhanced the sports program, which began in earnest when Stagmaier Gym was built in 1953.

In 1987, parish needs dictated more building, when the Parish Life Center and a third school building were added to the campus. Meeting rooms and office space along with four classrooms, a school library, and computer lab completed our facility to date.

Our Lady of Perpetual Help School is a state approved, diocesan certified, and SACS accredited Catholic school which has grown from 60 students in 1937 to 415 in 2003. The Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary began the education of our children and, with lay teachers, continued to serve the school until the summer of 2003. Currently, lay teachers educate our children from Kindergarten through the eighth grade.

Today our parish consists of nearly 1,000 families and currently serves numerous liturgical, charitable and social ministries throughout the Chattanooga Catholic community.
